Social Proof Beyond Reviews: Show Shoppers What Others Are Looking At

Reviews are the best-known kind of social proof, but they are not the only kind. “Other shoppers keep looking at this” is a signal too. It helps a new visitor decide where to start, and it helps someone comparing items see what others open most. Most Viewed Products does this by showing a row of your store’s most viewed products. This guide covers the setup and what shoppers see.

Before you start, know what the app is and is not:

  • It ranks products by how often shoppers open their product pages. It does not use sales or add-to-cart data.
  • It is not real time. The list is rebuilt automatically about every 3 hours.
  • The row shows each product’s image, title and price. The row itself does not show view counts.
  • It ranks all of your products. You cannot build a row for one collection.

The app has one plan, with a 7-day free trial. The current price is on its App Store listing.

Part 1: How to set it up

Step 1: Turn on the app embed

Install the app and approve the charge. The app’s Homepage tab shows “Action Required: Enable App Embed in your Theme”.

  1. Click Enable in Theme Editor. Most Viewed Products Core is switched on for you.
  2. Click Save in the theme editor.
  3. Back in the app, click Recheck Status. You should see “App embed is enabled and verified successfully!”

Once the app embed is active, the banner is gone and the app opens on its main page with the view count for each product.

This embed is also what records product page views. Until your store has some views, there is nothing to rank.

Step 2: Add the row to a page

You can add it anywhere that supports app blocks. In the theme editor, open the page, click Add section (or Add block), open the Apps tab and choose Most Viewed Products. For the homepage, the Helps tab in the app has an Add Section to Homepage button that does this for you.

Good places to try:

  • Homepage. It gives a new visitor a starting point.
  • Product page. It shows someone who is comparing items what others open most.

Step 3: Set the block options

Click the block in the theme editor. It has two settings:

  • Enable Carousel is on by default. Switch it off to show a static grid instead.
  • Limit goes from 1 to 50, with a default of 10. Pick a number that fits your layout. If you place two of these blocks on one page, both use the Limit of the last one, so use one block per page.

Step 4: Choose what counts as “most viewed”

In the app, open the Settings tab. Under Most Viewed Products widget based on views of, choose All time, Monthly, Weekly or Daily. The default is All time. Two things to know:

  • Monthly, Weekly and Daily count views in a window that ends at the start of today in your shop’s time zone, so “Daily” means yesterday.
  • If the window you pick has no data, the row falls back to all-time views.

Click Save.

Step 5: Refresh when you change something

The Settings tab has a Caching section. The data is regenerated automatically every 3 hours, and the Regenerate button forces a refresh now. The storefront also keeps a copy for about 30 minutes, so a change can take a little while to show.

Optional: under Templates, click Edit next to Widget to change the row heading, which is “Most Viewed Products” by default. This is the only place to rename it. There is a Revert to default button if you want to undo your edit.

Part 2: What your shoppers see

  • A row with a heading. The row shows “Most Viewed Products” (or your own heading), then each product’s image, title and price.
  • Products in view order. The order follows the view window you chose. It reflects views up to the last rebuild, so a product that went popular an hour ago may not be there yet.
  • A carousel with dots. With Enable Carousel on, shoppers swipe through the products and use page dots below. There are no arrows. On wider screens (850 pixels and up) you get three products per row, and on phones two.
  • A grid. With Enable Carousel off, all products show at once in the same column layout.
  • Number of products. The block’s Limit sets how many cards show, from 1 to 50.
  • No numbers in the row. The row does not show how many views each product has. (The app also has a separate optional View Count block that shows “N views” on a product page. This guide does not cover it.)

If a new store has no view data yet, the row shows the heading with no products. Open a few product pages in a private window and give it time to rebuild.

Because the row follows views and not sales, describe it as what people are looking at, not as “best sellers”.
